Obituaries

  • 8 February 2011 Eddie Sands, a research technician and superintendent in the Zoology and Psychology departments respectively, and a long-time chairman of the Bristol branch of the ASTMS Union, died on 13 January.
  • 22 March 2012 Margaret Reynolds, who served as senior secretary and administrator in the Geography Department for 25 years, died in February. Emeritus Professor Peter Haggett remembers 'a much-loved and much-respected colleague' who was 'a centre of good sense and calm efficiency'.
  • 8 February 2011 George Hughes, Emeritus Professor of Zoology, died recently at the age of 85. The School of Biological Sciences offers this tribute and condolences to his family.
  • 15 March 2012 Professor John Steer died on 20 February aged 83. Michael Liversidge, Emeritus Dean of Arts, remembers the man whose appointment as the first Lecturer in European Art at Bristol marked the effective birth of the University’s Department of History of Art.
  • 10 November 2010 Frank Round, Emeritus Professor of Phycology in the School of Biological Sciences, died on 26 October.
  • 9 November 2010 Phil Marshall, a former member of the Site Services cleaning team, died suddenly on 27 October.
  • 15 May 2012 Daphne Turner, the University’s first Director of Physical Education, died recently. Bob Reeves offers an appreciation.
  • 20 April 2012 Alan Webber, a handyman in Maintenance Services, died on 15 April, 2012 aged 62. His colleague John Black offers this tribute.
  • 22 November 2010 Dr Roger Berkeley, Senior Lecturer in Bacteriology and former Warden of Badock Hall, died on 18 September. Dr Gilbert Howe and Professor Niall Logan offer an appreciation of his life and work.
  • 21 January 2011 Professor AW Brian Simpson, a Visiting Chair at the University’s School of Law, died on 10 January 2011. The School of Law offers this tribute.
