Grants and awards
- 22 December 2009 More than 300 people die of a heart attack each day and research has shown there is a peak in heart attacks on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day due perhaps to rich meals, alcohol and stress. A new British Heart Foundation (BHF) grant of £715,000 has been awarded to Professor Andrew Newby at the Bristol Heart Institute, to find out if harmful sub-types of immune cells cause more heart attacks.
- 20 December 2010 A lifetime achievement award was presented to David May FRS FREng, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bristol at the 2010 Elektra Electronics Industry Awards in London on 9 December.
- 16 December 2009 A new MRC grant of over £290,000 has been awarded to Paolo Madeddu, Professor of Experimental Cardiovascluar Medicine in the Bristol Heart Institute, to study stem cells in patients with cardiovascular disease.
- 4 October 2022 Sugar dots to supercharge photosynthesis, a quantum camera and a genuinely ground-breaking probiotic are among the Bristol innovations that have attracted over £19 million in investment over the past nine months.
- 2 December 2009 Susan Hooper, a consultant senior lecturer in the University of Bristol’s Dental School, has been named dentist teacher of the year by the Dental Defence Union (DDU), beating off stiff competition from the most talented and motivated teachers at the thirteen other dental schools in the UK.
- 29 December 2018 A scientist from the University of Bristol has been honoured in the Queen’s New Year Honours list, which recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. Along with the Birthday honours, they are the most significant announcement of civilian and military gallantry awards.
- 29 October 2018 The GW4+ consortium, of which the University of Bristol is a member, has been awarded a 5-year Doctoral Training Programme from the Natural Environment Research Council.
- 6 September 2022 The University of Bristol is part of a new £6.75 million national network to accelerate UK innovation. The Innovation Launchpad Network+ brings together leading universities, the Catapult Network and regional innovation ecosystems to enrich the exchange of ideas and knowledge across these organisations.
- 2 September 2022 Dr Chris Clements of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences has received the prestigious Founders’ Prize which commemorates the enthusiasm and vision of the Society’s founders.
